The UST Male Tennisters moved closer to the UAAP Season 88 men’s tennis title after thumping the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 3-0, in Game 1 of the best-of-three finals on Wednesday, March 25, at the Colegio San Agustin-Bulacan Tennis Court.
The Male Tennisters banked on grit in the singles matches, grinding out all three contests in extended battles to take full control of the tie.
Evan Bacalso set the tone in the second singles, fending off Miguel Iglupas in a tight contest, 6-4, 7-6 (3), to give the Male Tennisters an early advantage.
Christopher Sonsona followed with a win in the first singles against UP’s Lance Fernandez in three sets, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-1, to push UST to the cusp of victory.
Ericjay Tangub completed the sweep in the third singles, overcoming Loucas Fernandez in another marathon match, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, as the Male Tennisters sealed the win without needing the doubles matches.
The Male Tennisters will look to complete the series sweep against UP on Saturday, March 28, at the same venue.
