UST’s Angge Poyos and Josh Ybanez sit atop the UAAP Season 88 volleyball MVP races after the end of Round 1, based on the official UAAP tally released on Monday, March 16.

Poyos recorded 156.22 statistical points (SP) to lead the pack in the women’s division. She holds a 9.322-SP lead over Adamson’s Shaina Nitura.

UST’s opposite spiker Regina Jurado also placed ninth in the race with 120 SPs as the Golden Tigresses finished the first round with back-to-back wins against the UP Fighting Maroons and the FEU Lady Tamaraws.

After seven games, Poyos put up 111 points on 95 attacks, 12 blocks and four service aces to carry the Golden Tigresses to four wins. She also led the league in spiking efficiency with a 39.92% success rate.

Two-time UAAP MVP Ybañez collected 158 SP after tallying 121 points in the first round via 110 spikes, seven aces, and four blocks.

He also ranked fifth in spiking with a 41.98% success rate, and placed fifth in service with 0.28 aces per frame.

NU Bulldogs’ Michaelo Buddin and Leo Ordiales followed with 153.750 SPs and 152.083 SPs, respectively.

The Golden Spikers ended Round 1 with a 5-2 record, losing only to NU and the unbeaten FEU Tamaraws.

Both UST squads will return to action on Saturday, March 21, against the Ateneo Blue Eagles at the Araneta Coliseum.
