UST will have to wait a little longer for prized recruit Bambam Berayo’s Golden Tigresses debut after she sat out the 2026 Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals, where the team completed an undefeated championship run.
According to UST head coach Shaq Delos Santos, the team is focused on Berayo’s recovery and easing her back to full strength in preparation for UAAP Season 89.
“Magre-recover muna siya,” Delos Santos told the Varsitarian.“Kailangan niya pa ng more strengthening, pero sa training okay naman siya.”
Berayo remained on the Golden Tigresses’ bench throughout the tournament to support her teammates.
She joined UST as one of the country’s most highly sought-after high school recruits after leading the National University Nazareth School (NUNS) Lady Bullpups to consecutive UAAP girls’ volleyball titles in Seasons 87 and 88.
Berayo was named the Season 88 girls’ volleyball Most Valuable Player and 1st Best Outside Hitter after finishing second in scoring and placing third in both spiking and receiving.
The 18-year-old outside hitter committed to UST shortly after helping the National Capital Region win back-to-back Palarong Pambansa championships, where she earned Finals MVP honors.
She also gained international exposure after representing the Philippines in the 3rd Asian Youth Games Under-18 tournament as a member of the NUNS-backed national team.
Berayo remains on course to suit up for the Golden Tigresses with five years of playing eligibility, starting in Season 89.
Meanwhile, the Golden Tigresses will shift their focus to preparations for the V-League Challenge, which begins on Aug. 16. Jay-z Perez
