UST faculty members ratify CBA, economic benefits to be distributed

18 March 2014, 11:50 p.m. - FACULTY members have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the University administration, paving the way for salary increases and other economic benefits as well as tougher criteria for promotion.

Tuesday’s secret ballot resulted in overwhelming support for the 2011-2016 CBA, with 1,368 faculty members voting for the approval of the new five-year contract that will allow the distribution of three years’ worth of backpay.

Faculty union gets new collective bargaining deal with UST admin

11 March 2014, 12:34 a.m. - THE UNIVERSITY administration and the 1,600-strong UST Faculty Union (USTFU) finally signed a new, five-year collective bargaining agreement (CBA) Monday night, with both sides agreeing to a “compromise” to avert a strike.

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Clarita Carillo, head of the management panel, said a copy of the 2011-2016 CBA—delayed for almost three years—would be released this week. Faculty members will have five days to review the document, which provides for salary hikes and other terms and conditions of employment, before ratifying it in a general assembly.

Admin warns vs union’s demands, says UST’s standing could suffer

08 March 2014, 8:44 p.m. - THE UST Faculty Union's (USTFU) demands could deprive the University of institutional recognition and accreditation as it would be unable to meet minimum standards for teachers, the administration has claimed.

Dr. Clarita Carillo, vice rector for academic affairs, made the warning in a letter to administrative and academic officials last Feb. 26, in a bid to “set the facts straight” due to supposed “false and specious” information spreading among faculty members.

Rector: Admin willing to reduce faculty workload, grant benefits

Herminio Dagohoy, O.P. assured faculty members earlier today that workloads would be reduced starting next academic year and financial benefits would soon be distributed under a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), seeking to ease tensions a week after the faculty union filed a notice of strike.

Faculty union files strike notice

01 March 2014, 10:35 p.m. - THE UST Faculty Union (USTFU) has filed a notice of strike before the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB), following a collective bargaining deadlock with the University administration.

The issues that led to filing of the strike notice were the UST administration’s rejection of the union’s final proposal and refusal to provide audited financial statements needed during collective bargaining talks, according to the notice of strike dated Feb. 25 and signed by USTFU President George Lim.

UST admin bares causes of deadlock with faculty union

18 February 2014, 7:55 p.m. - THE UNIVERSITY administration has finally broken its silence on the reasons for the deadlock in collective bargaining talks with the faculty, claiming union negotiators demanded a reduction in teaching units without cutting pay.

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Clarita Carillo, in a letter to administrative and academic officials dated Feb. 17, said the University would pursue all legal remedies amid the impasse and assured Thomasians there would be no disruptions in classes and University activities.

CBA negotiations end in deadlock

14 February 2014, 11:30 p.m. - NEGOTIATIONS between the University administration and the UST Faculty Union (USTFU) for a new five-year deal on salary hikes and other terms of employment ended in a deadlock this afternoon, less than a week after the two parties resumed talks.

"This is to inform you that the CBA (collective bargaining agreement) negotiations ended in a deadlock. Details to follow," said USTFU President and union panel chairperson George Lim in a text message to faculty members.

Admin, faculty union to go back to negotiating table

11 February 2014, 10:00 p.m. - THE UNIVERSITY administration and the UST Faculty Union (USTFU) have agreed to continue talks over a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), ending a cooling-off period that was supposed to last five days.

A letter to faculty club presidents stated that the resumption of the negotiations would remove the possibility of a bargaining deadlock.

Collective bargaining deadlock looms

06 February 2014, 10:44 p.m. - THERE'S no deal yet on a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), with the University administration and the UST Faculty Union (USTFU) entering a five-day "cooling-off period" after negotiations earlier today.

“Following the ground rules set by both [panels], there will be a five-day cooling off period before a deadlock can be declared. Please continue praying for a successful CBA,” said USTFU President George Lim in a text message to faculty members.
