CBCP head joins Dominican order
June 15, 2015, 11:00 a.m. - THE HEAD of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is now a member of the Dominican Clerical Fraternity of the Philippines (DCFP).
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, CBCP president, received the habit of Saint Dominic during the vespers of the Dominican Community of Manaoag last June 12 at the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Manaoag in Pangasinan. Fr. Gerard Timoner, O.P., prior provincial, led the celebration.
Villegas considered it a blessing to be part of the Dominican order.
Deceased second Filipino rector of UST, “a true steward of Christ”
Oct. 30, 2014, 10:45 a.m. - A FIRM but compassionate man, Fr. Frederik Fermin, O.P. -- the second Filipino rector of the University of Santo Tomas—nurtured countless individuals as an epitome of a "true servant of Christ."
In his homily during the funeral mass for Fermin at the Santisimo Rosario Parish Church this afternoon, UST Rector Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, O.P., praised his predecessor for exemplary service to the University.
“Fr. Fermin’s contributions in the academic section of the University expressed his ideals of a well-rounded education for the Thomasians,” Dagohoy said.
Second Filipino rector of UST dies at 90
Oct. 28, 2014, 1:29 a.m. - THE SECOND Filipino rector of the University of Santo Tomas, Fr. Frederik Fermin, O.P., passed away Monday evening at the age of 90.
Fermin, who hailed from Nijmegen, the Netherlands, came to the country in 1962 and became a Filipino citizen through naturalization in 1976.
Fermin served as rector of the University from 1978 to 1982, succeeding Fr. Leonardo Legaspi, O.P., the first Filipino rector of UST who became auxiliary bishop of Manila and archbishop of Caceres (Naga).
