USTH holds endocrine lecture
GIGANTISM and dwarfism, which refers to the body’s overgrowth and undergrowth, respectively, can be prevented if detected early and treated with genetically-engineered growth hormones.
This was the thrust of the lecture given by Dr. Arlene Mercado, a pediatric endocrinologist from the National Institutes of Health of the United States of America, during the 4th Thomasian Endocrine Lecture last January 7 at the UST Continuing Medical Education Auditorium.

THE PHILIPPINES probably has one of the worst breast cancer incidence rates in Asia, if the World Health Organization, the Department of Health, and the Philippine Cancer Society will be believed. And with its annual age-standardized rate of 47.7 breast cancer cases per 100,000 people (according to the Manila Cancer Registry and the 2002 International Journal of Cancer), the country is probably still number one in Southeast Asia.
Commerce launches Entrepreneurship course
THE UST College of Commerce (CC) introduced “Triple E” or the Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC) major in Entrepreneurship as its newest program last January 27 in its Career Orientation Seminar at the Rizal Auditorium.
“Triple E”, which stands for Entrepreneurship and Ethics Education Towards Equity is a four-year course on the scientific bbut ethical practice of entrepreneurship. The course will be offered next school year.
According to Commerce Dean Dr. Jeanette Loanzon, the course is necessary for today’s economic situation.
Pharmacy student tops online stock tournament
A FACULTY of Pharmacy sophomore recently got the number one spot in the “virtual” Online Stock Trading Tournament launched by the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) in November 2003.
Mark Lester Sy, 19, emerged as winner among 100 participants after dominating the charts with an accumulated 103% increase on his portfolio value in the final analysis of the online trading simulation game.
Roco, Villanueva bare plans during miting de avance
ONLY two of the six presidential candidates went to the “Miting-de-Avance ’04; The Presidentiables Speak,” at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Auditorium last Feb. 3.
Former senator and education secretary Raul Roco and Jesus is Lord movement founder Bro. Eddie Villanueva were given the exclusive chance to “court” the Thomasian community, defend their candidacy and present their political agenda and platforms in front of an awed Thomasian crowd and various cause-oriented organizations.
The two candidates expressed affinity.
‘Get involved in May polls’
“We say that hope screams but perhaps the source of this hope will run dry if we simply remain as spectators to the political circus and do nothing for our country,” Fr. Lana said. “As Thomasians, we should be active citizens and help educate other people to choose a leader that would bring the country towards development.”
Fr. Lana added that due to the turbulent Philippine political scene, the people are confused and therefore need guidance.

Late priest dragged in FPJ disqualification case
POLITICAL partisans digging up dirt in time for the election season have made an unwitting victim out of UST’s venerable history.
It turns out the priest being claimed to have officiated in the purported wedding of opposition presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr.’s late father, Allan Fernando Poe, and a certain Paulita Gomez, was formerly a top official the University.
PGMA visits campus, launches scholarship
PRESIDENT Macapagal-Arroyo launched the Student’s Assistance Fund for Education for a Strong Republic (SAFE-4-SR) program in the University last Feb. 2.
SAFE-4-SR is an interest-free student loan program for third, fourth, and graduating college students.
According to the President, the program aims to address the increasing number of college students dropping out of school due to financial difficulties.
19th Ustetika yields new stars
WITH nearly a hundred participants, the 19th Ustetika Annual Awards for Literature proved the torch of literature still burns in the University. While last year’s winners came mostly from the Faculty of Arts of Letters, this year’s were a more equitable lot, with some coming from colleges such as Medicine, Pharmacy and Commerce.
