Individuality and the culture of memes

MANY middle-class teenagers have visited the image-based social media sites “9Gag,” “Reddit,” and “4Chan” far more than they ever have in museums and libraries. Now they know “Forever Alone,” “Troll Face,” and other memes far more than their own friends. The visual presentation of these websites and the relevance of the posts to the personal lives of users have made the youth more interested in reading rage comics than spending time with their friends.

Meme is “an idea, a behavior, or style that spread from person to person within a culture.” Whereas “you are what you eat,” you are what you surf on the Internet.

Troubling roads

BEFORE you cross the street, be warned of reckless drivers. There’s a greater chance for you to be involved in a road mishap than in an air crash. This is particularly true of the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA). Recent primetime TV news has recently reported a slew of freak accidents there, including a cab suddenly on fire and a bus hitting the railing and nearly falling off a flyover. The increasing number of accidents there so alarmed the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino that he had EDSA “blessed” by a Catholic priest.

Gay sex fuels rise in HIV/AIDS cases

CASES of HIV/AIDS decreased by 25 percent in 2010 worldwide, but the Philippines was an exception, according to a report released by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS).

“The number of HIV infections and AIDS cases in the country continues to rise, and not lessen,” said Merceditas Apilado, UNAIDS social mobilization adviser, in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The Philippine HIV and AIDS Registry reported that 92 percent of the HIV/AIDS cases from 1984 to 2012 were primarily due to sexual interaction. Only four percent was caused by needle sharing among illegal drug users, while cases of mother-to-child virus transmission registered less than one percent.

Allergies: Not a simple case of rashes

IT MAY not be a major concern of the public, but it should not be neglected as it can possibly endanger one’s life.

An allergy is an immune system disorder triggered by allergens, the substances in the environment that initiate the production of an antibody called Immunoglobulin E (IgE), said Professor Donnie Ramos, assistant dean of the College of Science who specializes in immunology or the study of the body’s immune responses.

“All allergic patients are characterized by the production of IgE,” he added.

The immune system recognizes the allergen and will start to produce IgE at an elevated level which will result in the manifestation of symptoms like skin rashes, itching and redness of the eyes, and difficulty in breathing.

Finding the elusive last piece

IS THE so-called “God particle” the missing piece of the complex puzzle of how the universe and the human beings came into existence?

Physicists confirmed that they have found a subatomic particle consistent with the mysterious Higgs boson last July 4 at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Bosons, like the Higgs particle, are subatomic particles that often interact and mediate with other particles being referred to as force carriers. Meanwhile, fermions—composed of quarks, which combine to make other necessary particles like protons and neutrons, and leptons, like electrons—usually join together to form atom and eventually, matter, or anything that occupies space and has mass.

First Catholic media summit addresses social media use

The Church itself is a huge social network, so it embraces the emergence of digital media that can be used to communicate God’s love.

As the Church enters the period of “New Evangelization” seeking to reintroduce Christ to an increasingly secularized world, social networks can help in mission, evangelization, and the promotion of Christian values, speakers at the first Catholic Social Media Summit in the Philippines said.

Reflecting on the theme “Ministering Grace to this Generation,” Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle said the Church welcomes social networking as long as it is used for a good cause and in a way that will communicate God’s love for the people.

A preacher of grace

Because of St. Dominic de Guzman, priests became “preachers” of God’s word, and not just dispensers of the sacraments. This is the monumental contribution of the founder of the Order of Preachers to the Christian Church.

The task of preaching had been intended only for bishops at the end of the 12th century, according to the country’s top Dominican.

“Many suppose that all priests can preach and this has been the case ever since, but this was not so until the time of [St.] Dominic,” said Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, O.P. in an e-mail to the Varsitarian.

St. Dominic’s petition to establish the Order of Preachers (O.P.) to Pope Innocent III gave priests the right to preach the bible, he said.
