IT IS NOT enough to know what is happening. Sometimes it is necessary to go behind the story to understand what’s really going on.

When I was informed that I was meeting her, I was filled with all sorts of apprehension. Mr. Beacon told me, she was a Pakistani correspondent of the British Broadcasting Network (BBC) who was planning to do a story on the war happening down south.

The International Bible Society (IBS), a Colorado-based Protestant Christian organization, will publish an updated version of the New Testament in April. A version that includes the Old Testament will come out in 2005.

Called Today’s New International Version (TNIV), it will differ from its earlier edition, the New International Version, by using less outdated terms and being more gender-sensitive.

Pope John Paul II reiterated the Vatican’s stand against divorce in his speech to the Roman Rota, a tribunal handling annulment appeals, last January 28.

Although the appeal is limited to lawyers who are free to choose their cases, the Supreme Pontiff said Catholic civil lawyers must refuse to handle divorce cases if these are intended to break the marriage bond.

STUDENTS’ safety inside the campus is the primary concern of the University of Santo Tomas’ security personnel. Aside from keeping Thomasians out of danger, the security force should be courteous in dealing with members of the University. Thomasians should be respectful in return.

University Security Office consultant Norberto Brosas said UST guards undergo seminars on bomb threats, fire drills, discipline, and evacuation, including courtesy. However, incidents of misunderstanding between guards and students persist.

THE SCHOOLYEAR is coming to an end, but schoolwork is far from over. In fact, the last few months are the busiest parts of the year. Examinations and other requirements come piling up all at the same time.

Facing these problems, students are caught between two things, being burnt out or still not knowing what to do. And yet, they have to survive the rest of this schoolyear’s challenges in order to claim a much deserved vacation.

THE UNIVERSITY-WIDE Red Cross Youth Council (RCY) sponsored the Disaster Preparedness Symposium last Jan. 31 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex.

The symposium was conducted in cooperation with the National Disaster Coordinating Council, the highest civil defense unit in the country under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Department of National Defense.

According to Nelia Tabliago, Civil Defense Officer-National Capital Region, the Philippines is the most disaster-prone country in the world from 1900 to 1990.

THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters kicked off its 106th foundation day with a mass celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop of Manila Msgr. Socrates Villegas last Feb. 11 at the Santissimo Rosario Chapel.

In his homily, Bishop Villegas enumerated three keys in order to achieve the peace the nation is longing for – simplicity of heart, serenity of spirit, and silence of mind.

The celebration was highlighted by a “Fishball Festival” at the Tinoko Park and an acoustic presentation at the Colayco Park.
