RAMPANT bag lifting inside the Faculty of Arts and Letters seems to have been checked after a suspect, said to be a member of the Salisi Gang, was caught in the act inside the college premises last Feb. 20.

The suspect was Arthur Juan, 25, jobless, and a native of Obando, Bulacan.

Juan was arrested after Ma. Nina Luzviminda Reyes, a Behavioral Science senior, saw him searching the bags of unsuspecting students. Reyes immediately asked security guard Danilo Tumbaga to monitor Juan’s actions.

Ang mga ritwal

Nagsisimula ang Panahon ng Kuwaresma sa Miyerkules de Ceniza o Miyerkules ng Abo na tumapat ngayong taon sa Pebrero 13.

SHE COVERED her mouth to stifle a scream but gagged noises escaped through the gaps between her blood-soiled hands. Her feeble sobs and heavy panting were muffled as she gasped for air. The chill wind numbed her skin as she hastily tried to sneak into the thorny brambles.

Mud had clung to her skin, which was now wet with perspiration. The thorns of wild shrubs scratched her skin without cease. She listened intently for heavy footsteps as her heart pounded inside her chest.

AFTER years of separation from their alma mater, Thomasian members of the diocesan clergy finally experienced a real “coming home.”

Retracing their paths to the priesthood, more than a hundred Thomasian bishops and priests from the Alumni Priests Association (ALPA) celebrated their 68th homecoming last Jan. 24 to 25 at the UST Central Seminary.

The reunion was supposed to be hosted by the Archdiocese of Davao but because of the unstable security in Mindanao, it was transferred to UST.

Religion spreads itself over many areas. Up to now, even as the progress of science and technology rapidly continues, religion remains to be sensed in the background of culture, belief, and tradition. Undeniably, religion has also influenced current literary trends.

The intricate relationship between religion and other areas of human life inspired the University Week Forum “Religion and Literature” held last Jan. 30 at the UST Center for Creative Writing and Studies (UST-CCWS).

Does the act of breaking glass

really satisfy the need

to unleash an imprisoned anger?

The suffocating rage

shapes the fists into impressive hammers,

knocking down everything within reach

until all the jagged shards of glass

haphazardly fall to the ground.

One hopes, in his frantic state,

that the rage has been transformed

into something else¯

something less dangerous,

like the molten earth from deep within

In this big house full of rooms,

I always find myself seeking solace

in empty corners. The too many hours

we have piled so neatly in our rooms

have made so familiar

every fixture defining each nook¯

chairs, tables, lamps and vases.

Do not ask me why this house

seems to get bigger everyday or why the chairs

are always empty. The walls are too kind—

I can always talk to them

even though they never talk back.

The immense space

In celebration of the UST Main Building’s 75th anniversary, the UST Museum of Arts and Sciences, with the Center for Intercultural Studies, sponsored a piano concert featuring two of the Conservatory of Music’s talented professors—Julie Ann Hallazgo and Najib Ismail.

IN AN impressive and courageous attempt to define “20th Century Thomasian Literature,” respected literary critic and De La Salle University literature professor Dr. Isagani Cruz assessed Thomasian writing through the newly-released 2002 UST Center for Creative Writing and Studies (CCWS) calendar.

According to him, Thomasian writing is strictly artistic in terms of craft but full of emotions.
