Thomasian wins in 62nd Emmy

THIS Thomasian alumnus has quietly worked his way to Walt Disney Pictures and has bagged himself an Emmy.

Joseph “Joe” Mateo, a Fine Arts graduate, received an Outstanding Achievement in Animation award during the 62nd Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards last August 21 for his work as storyboard artist in Prep & Landing, a computer-animated television Christmas special produced by Walt Disney Pictures.

He shares this juried award with colleagues William George III, who worked as background key designer, and Andy Harkness, the special’s art director.

Divorce debate revived

IS IT time to allow divorce in Catholic Philippines?

The debate over whether husband and wife should be allowed to get out of wedlock has been revived anew, and the arguments remain the same.

Last July 27, House Bill (HB) 1799 or An Act Introducing Divorce in the Philippines was filed by Gabriela party-list representatives Luzviminda Ilagan and Emerenciana de Jesus.

Fr. Melvin Castro, executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Commission on Family and Life, said existing laws are enough to address problems such as violence against women.

Mother of the Bicolanos visits birthplace

CLAD with golden cape and crowned with a gold diadem, ‘Inang’ came to visit the University last month to extend her healing miracles to the sick.

Fondly called ‘Ina’ by Bicolanos, Our Lady of Peñafrancia has long been attracting devotees who wish to be cured of their illnesses.

Pilgrimage of Ina

To celebrate its 300th year, the image of ‘Inang’ Peñafrancia was brought to different parishes in Metro Manila.

The image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia was first brought to the Edsa Shrine before it was transferred to the Santisimo Rosario Parish for public display from August 23 to 28.

‘Legal abortion will do more harm than good’

ABORTION is unacceptable, no matter how many people call for it. Following a recent media blitz by radical feminist groups demanding the legalization of abortion as “right” for women, Church officials did not hesitate to call the procedure by its real name: murder.

Fr. Melvin Castro of the Commission on Family and Life of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines maintained that abortion is against the commandment of God that “Thou shall not kill.”

“It murders the unborn child who is already a human person. It is plain and simple murder,” Castro said in a phone interview.

Former Artlets dean wants young people to become lay Dominicans

Belen Tangco, the former Arts and Letters dean who is now head of lay Dominicans in the Philippines, plans to expand the membership of what was formerly called the Third Order by recruiting younger people to join the Order’s preaching mission.

Tangco is in Rome to witness the international order’s General Chapter, the Dominicans’ highest governing body that gathers every three years and elects the Master of the Order every nine years.

“I have tried to bring some kind of continuity of ideas,” Tangco said in an interview posted on the Dominican Order’s website following the election of the new Master, Bruno Cadoré. “I have asked for clarifications and proposed some measures pertaining to various regional situations.”

The blessing of a loss

FOR THE record, summer has never been that cold, not because of climate change but of a broken friendship.

It all started two years ago, when we became connected through our common friends. He is a typical eye-catcher, the type I never thought I’d become close to. We enjoyed each other’s company through shallow jokes and pointless conversations. In my moments of self-doubt, he was there to boost my self-esteem.

He cared for me, until a daring confession ended it all.

It felt like playing an extra in my own movie, instructed to strut in front of the leading man who would never give his glance to a girl like me. My role ended at the instant I walked past him.

Music successful in first international guitar fest

WITH UST’s quadricentennial anniversary next year, the Conservatory of Music and its guitar department presented Guitarra 2010: The First UST International Guitar Festival to advance the ageless art of classical guitar in the University.

From August 23 to 27, the PhilamLife Auditorium served as the official venue of concerts while masterclasses and lectures were held at the Albertus Magnus Building. The event was conducted in cooperation with the Foundation for the Musical Filipino.

“Our primary goal here is to impart the knowledge of all the guest artists to the students,” said Angelito Agcaoili, one of the main organizers.

“Sa ‘Yo Lamang” fails audience’s expectations

UNLIKE her poignant family movie Tanging Yaman (2000), Laurice Guillen fails to present her arresting vision of family dynamics in the melodramatic Sa’Yo Lamang (2010).

Produced by Star Cinema, written by award winning writer Ricky Lee and topbilled by the famous actors such as Lorna Tolentino, Christopher De Leon and Bea Alonzo, Sa’Yo Lamang is too pessimistic and weighted dons by the miseries of the characters whose plight are presented in convoluted family.

Alumnus Prudencio Lamarroza holds first exhibit in UST

ALREADY a familiar persona in art galleries here and abroad, Thomasian Prudencio Villamor Lamarroza have indeed gone a long way before his homecoming. Only now at age 64 did he mount his first exhibit in his alma mater which ran from Sept. 1 to 15 at the Beato Angelico Main Gallery with the title The Colors of Amor Lamarroza.

“Having an exhibit here [in UST] was just a dream to me before,” Lamarroza said.

The exhibit is a part of Artistang Tomasino Ako, a series of art exhibitions throughout the year in preparation for the Quadricentennial celebration.

UST culture flashed in fashion

THE STUDENT Organization Coordinating Council (SOCC), is showcasing a three-part event titled Pintig: Kulturang Tomasino, which highlights an amalgamation of fashion and cultural shows and artwork exhibition.

The fashion and dance presentations already took place at the Medicine Auditorium last August 31. Meanwhile, the art show will be mounted at the UST-Tan Yan Kee Student Center on September 30.

The fashion show and dance exhibitions aimed to relive the four significant periods in Philippine history, from the Spanish conquistadores to the World War II at the Pacific Rim. The fashion designers also decided to include the pre-colonial epoch in the fashion show.
