Clearing the thicket of legal gobbledygook

HAVE you ever wondered why lawyers often use unfamiliar words that however sound impressive and intellectual? Latin terms such as ipso facto, pro tanto, and as cautela are so common in their everyday vocabulary, thus rendering the ordinary layman clueless on what lawyers really mean.

The darkest years remembered

“I SIGN Proclamation Number 1081 placing the entire Philippines under martial law.”

These were the words of the late President Ferdinand Marcos that kept the attention of hundreds of Filipinos glued to their television sets.

September 21, 1972 was an unforgettable event in the history of the Philippines shocked the entire nation.

75 years of Thomasian pride

WHO WOULD have thought that after 75 glorious years, the school which at first held classes in mere quonset huts would eventually become one of the most respected secondary schools in the country?

From a humble area located at the right wing of the Main Building on June 6, 1928, the University of Santo Tomas High School has become an institution centered on Christian values and academic excellence.

Recent graduates value the commitment and integrity instilled by UST High School amid the fast-changing and modern world.

The Varsitarian in the age of ferment

THE SIXTIES were a decade of ferment not only for the nation’s politics but also for its letters.

That ferment was reflected in the Varsitarian.

But what writer, poet, and educator Cirilo Bautista best remembers was the fellowship in the paper. “We had very good camaraderie in the Varsitarian,” he said. “The world was very small for us then. The world of our writing and of our classes.”

How the ‘V’ was

Nursing his way to glory

HE PLACED sixth in the Nursing Licensure Examination in 2002, graduated cum laude in the same year and received two consecutive Quezon Leadership Awards. Amid all these recognitions, UST Nursing graduate Earl Francis Sumile never expected to be named to The Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP), which he considers the “crowning glory” in a student’s life.

Out of the 408 nominees, he was one of the top 30 students from all over the country who vied for the award.

Invincibility and negligence

WHO WOULD have thought that the event on Sept. 11, 2001 would happen to the United States of America and at its forefront, New York? The United States, known for the FBI and the CIA, seems to have lost its reputation as a symbol of power and strength.

After a year of the Sept. 11 attack, there is no clear-cut victory for them. They may have launched a world-wide war on terrorism, but Bin Laden, the man believed to be behind the attacks, is still free.

Crude intentions

It all boils down to intention.

The possible enactment into law of House Bill (HB) No. 4955 or the Medical Malpractice Bill has stirred the erstwhile silent medical profession.

Members of the medical community see the proposed law, which seeks to impose stiffer penalties on erring practitioners, as another thoughtless piece of legislation.

Looking for ‘trouble’

GAPING at the raw beauty of a mountain from afar is a relaxing activity that does not need any deep thinking. But setting foot on it and trying to reach its peak is another story that needs to be pondered twice, or even more.
