LEGAZPI Bishop Emeritus Nestor Cariño, a UST Central Seminary alumnus, died on Saturday, May 24. He was 86.
Cariño died at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City, according to a Facebook post of the Diocese of Legazpi.
The bishop emeritus underwent formation at the UST Central Seminary from 1955 to 1962.
An Albay native, Cariño was appointed auxiliary bishop of Legazpi in 1978. He eventually served as the diocese’s fifth bishop from 2005 to 2007.
The prelate was bishop of Borongan in Eastern Samar from 1980 until he was elected secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in 1986.
In a statement, CBCP asked the clergy, religious, and lay faithful to pray for Cariño’s eternal repose.
“Let us commend him to the mercy of our loving Father, in gratitude for his lifetime of selfless service to the Church and the People of God,” the CBCP said.
In 2001, he served as district bishop of the Manila archdiocese’s ecclesiastical district of Pasig. Two years later, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Daet.
Born on Sept. 8, 1938, Cariño was ordained a priest in 1961.
His remains will be laid to rest at Saint Gregory the Great Cathedral in Legazpi City, Albay.
