A THOMASIAN doctor has been listed among the world’s top 2% scientists for 2025, a ranking based on researchers’ significant impact in their respective disciplines.
Dr. Sandra Navarra of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery had 116 publications and 1,060 citations, excluding self-citations, good for the 169,887th spot in the annual ranking published by Stanford University in collaboration with the academic publisher Elsevier.
Navarra, a professor at the Department of Medicine and a physician at UST Hospital, was cited for her research contributions in the field of clinical medicine and arthritis and rheumatology, particularly in the study of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Navarra obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology at the Philippine Women’s University in 1975, and her doctor of medicine at UST in 1980.
In 2021, she was recognized as one of the top 100 Asian Scientists by Asian Scientist Magazine in Singapore.
In 2014, her research paper titled “Treat-to-target in systemic lupus erythematosus: recommendations from an international task force,” which provides recommendations on managing SLE, was published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases.
The list, based on Elsevier’s Scopus database, ranks over 200,000 scientists based on their recent–year and career-long impact.
Other metrics used include the researcher’s h-index, which measures both research productivity and citations, and co-authorship.
