A UST alumna was named secretary general of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Communication arts graduate Cheloy Garafil assumed office on Sept. 23, replacing Reginald Velasco.
House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos moved to declare the secretary general post vacant and nominated Garafil.
Her appointment was unanimously approved in plenary by the House, after which Garafil took her oath.
Garafil assumed the post after the resignation of Martin Romualdez as House speaker on Sept. 17 amid a corruption scandal involving flood-control projects.
Romualdez was replaced by Isabela Rep. Faustino “Bojie” Dy, who was elected by 253 lawmakers.
Garafil was the resident representative of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office, which facilitates economic relations, cultural exchange, and consular services for overseas Filipino workers in Taiwan.
She was previously secretary of the Presidential Communications Office. Alexandra S. Demaisip
