ELGIN PEREZ,  a professor at the UST Faculty of Civil Law and legal coordinator of the University, died on Sept. 3. He was 44.

His death was confirmed to the Varsitarian by his sister, Erinn Perez, student welfare and development coordinator and instructor at the Faculty of Arts and Letters.

“He was a wonderful, dependable, selfless, loving, and generous brother,” she said. “He’s always there for everyone. We miss him terribly.”

In a Facebook post, the University honored Perez as a “a dedicated academic staff of the UST Faculty of Civil Law and trusted University official.”

“We are one with his family and loved ones in this time of grief, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Atty. Elgin for his contributions to UST,” the post read.

Perez earned his legal management degree from Artlets in 2002 and his law degree from the Faculty of Civil Law in 2006.

He was admitted to the Philippine Bar the following year and began teaching at the Faculty of Civil Law shortly after.

He also served as an administrator at the Faculty of Philosophy. 

UST Faculty Union President Emerito Gonzales remembered Perez as a “dedicated teacher and passionate legal mind.” 

“The union is grateful for his active participation in the negotiations for the collective bargaining agreements,” he said in a statement. 

Perez sat  on the management panel for the faculty’s collective bargaining agreement negotiations. 

His sister Erinn said the whole Perez family, as exemplified by the late former UST official, is “proud of our Thomasian identity.”

“My brother loved UST so much. It’s where he met the love of his life, his wife Nina, when they were college students in [Artlets],” she said.

“He has faithfully served the University all these years,” she added. 

His wake will be held until Sept. 8 at the Nacional Chapels and Crematory on Araneta Avenue in Quezon City.

A funeral Mass will take place at 9 a.m. on Sept. 9 at at the Santisimo Rosario Parish Church.
