The UST Legazpi Junior High School and Salinggawi dance troupes celebrated indigenous cultures and mating rituals in this year’s Pasinaya, the two-day cultural event organized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
Carrying the theme “Paglikha sa Kinabukasan,” this year’s edition of the multi-arts festival sought to foster a deeper appreciation of Philippine culture among the younger generation, held on Feb. 7 to 8.
The UST Legazpi Dance Troupe and Salinggawi were among the performing groups at the National Museum of National History on Feb. 8.
The UST Legazpi Dance Troupe performed a routine titled “Madya! Mag-ogma! Kulturang Bikolnon, Iselabrar ta!” which translates to “Come! Rejoice! Bicolano Culture, Let’s Celebrate It!”
The performance celebrated Bicolano culture and rural life through a playful mix of traditional dance and choral performances.
The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, longtime participants of the festival, performed a contemporary folk routine, titled “Los Sueños del Estranghero,” translating to “The Dreams of the Foreigner.”
Salinggawi President Jesela Angeli said the aim of this year’s performance was to distinguish itself from their previous Pasinaya performances.
“Last year, we focused on Maria Clara, who is very prim and proper. This year we explored other genres, especially in our contemporary piece of love and faith, which serves as our teaser for our annual concert in April,” Angeli told the Varsitarian.
Salinggawi also performed a folk piece from its 2024 Layag Concert, titled “Dagundong ng Lupa,” a Lumad suite which includes indigenous dances such as “Malantana,” “Binanog,” “Sohten,” and “Dumendingan.”
The CCP festival was held across multiple venues in Metro Manila, as well as regional venues in Iloilo City, Tagum, and Roxas City, Capiz. John Kobe S. Balod
