THE UNIVERSITY will no longer allow students to use QR codes for identification and building access as early as March 31, as it reverts to physical IDs for security checks.
In a memorandum addressed to academic unit heads, the Office of Information and Communications Technology said the use of QR codes would be discontinued effective March 31.
The beginning of implementation of the “no ID, no entry” policy differs across academic units, with the Faculty of Arts and Letters setting it on March 31 and the Faculty of Pharmacy on April 1.
This change comes after a security review wherein UST determined physical IDs as a more secure verification method. It comes after the printing backlogs for physical IDs were cleared, said UST Campus and Safety Office Director Juliano Parena Jr.
“The QR codes were meant to be an alternative due to the printing backlog during the pandemic. Now that the ID printing is already OK, then we encourage all Thomasians to use the physical IDs as their means of entering the campus and its buildings,” Parena told the Varsitarian.
Students’ QR codes are accessible via the MyUSTe student portal and were used in place of the physical IDs, which are distributed by the UST ID Room under the Santo Tomas e-Service Providers Data Center.
Thomasians who have yet to secure their physical IDs are advised to coordinate with the ID Room before March 31.
