MANILA Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Buhain Jr., a UST Graduate School alumnus, died on Wednesday, Nov. 13. He was 87.
He passed away on the morning of Nov. 13 at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City, the Archdiocese of Manila Office of Communications announced in a Facebook post.
Buhain obtained his master’s degree in philosophy at the UST Graduate School in 1974.
Congressman Eric Buhain, the late bishop’s nephew, paid tribute to the Manila cleric in a Facebook post.
“Bishop Ted, you have touched countless lives, mentored many priests, counseled so many,” he said. “You have been more than a friend to most, but an absolute pillar of strength and wisdom for your family and friends.”
Ordained to the episcopate in 1983, Buhain assisted the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin until his retirement in 2003.
His tenure as bishop was hounded by controversy after he was accused of graft when multi-million peso donations to Radio Veritas, where Buhain served as general manager from 1981 to 1990, were deemed unaccounted for.
The late bishop denied the allegations.
Buhain, who was ordained priest in 1960, served as parish priest of Quiapo Church from 1999 to 2004.
His wake will be held at the family residence at Brgy. Kaingin in Bacoor City, Cavite, from Nov. 14 to Nov. 17.
Cardinal Jose Advincula will preside over the funeral Mass for Buhain on Nov. 18 at the Quiapo Church.
Another funeral Mass will be held on Nov. 19 at the St. Michael the Archangel Parish in his hometown, followed by inurnment at Bacoor Catholic Cemetery.
