THE INTRAMUROS Grand Marian Procession is a reminder to devotees to reflect on the virtues of Mary and accept her as a companion during the Advent season, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula said during Mass at the Manila Cathedral on Dec. 1.
More than 40 canonically crowned images of the Blessed Virgin Mary from across the country graced the streets of Intramuros during the 43rd Grand Marian Procession, which coincided with the first Sunday of Advent.
For Advincula, Mary exemplifies the virtues of the Advent season centered on preparation, hope, and a life of service and love.
“During this Advent season, let us emulate Mary’s selfless love by serving those in need, sharing our blessings, and spreading God’s love in our communities,” he said in his homily during Mass prior to the procession.
“Let us embrace the spirit of Advent with hearts full of preparation, hope, and love. As we journey through this sacred season, may the Blessed Virgin Mary be our constant guide and companion.”
Advincula also said that Mary’s intercession gives way for devotees to “experience the joy and peace” of the season of Advent.
“Mary sustains our journey towards Christmas, for she teaches us how to live this Advent season in expectation of the Lord,” he said.
“As we hold this grand Marian devotion to express our unconditional love for the Blessed Mother, let [our acts of devotion] be a mirror of our inner readiness to follow the ways of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The annual Intramuros Grand Marian Procession, held every first Sunday of December, is in anticipation of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
It drew more than 19,000 Marian devotees this year, according to the Intramuros Administration.
Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Jaro, patroness of Western Visayas, joined the march after staying at the UST Santisimo Rosario Parish Church from Nov. 28 to 30.
