DESPITE exchanging signature stunts and lifts for a much easier popping and locking, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe still failed to groove towards the top in the first ever UAAP Streetdance Competition held simultaneously with this year’s UAAP closing ceremony last March 12 at the Araneta Coliseum.
The dance troupe garnered an overall score of 76.33 percent, placing fifth in the rankings. The La Salle Dance Company – Street was declared the champion, posting a 91 percent score, while the University of the Philippines Streetdance Club and Company of Ateneo Dancers (CAD) grabbed the second and third place with average scores of 88.25 percent and 86.67 percent respectively.
Decked in military-inspired outfits with tops bearing the Quadricentennial logo of the University, SDT displayed their versatility in one of the most popular dance genres by mixing some elements of cheerdancing such as cartwheels and turns with their own brand of urban flavour.
Routines were judged according to performance (60%) and skills (40%). The performance criterion includes creativity, showmanship, formation, attire, entertainment value and variety of styles, while skills included musicality, timing, execution and difficulty of styles.
Although only a few points shy from Ateneo in performance scores with 51.67 percent to CAD’s 53.6 percent, Salinggawi fumbled in the skills scores (28.6 percent) and suffered deductions due to major and minor falls in their routine.
Nevertheless, SDT Captain Mara Gesmundo is still positive about her team’s turnout.
“We danced with all our hearts and that’s what matters. Salinggawi is known for its versatility and flexibility, and we showed that,” Gesmundo told the Varsitarian.
Even Fr. Rolando dela Rosa, who was present in the contest, had only high praises for SDT. “I believe they are still the best,” he said.
Despite a flawed performance, the results of the UAAP Streetdance should not be compared with the annual UAAP Cheerdance Competition, where UST always managed to capture a place in the standings.
“The UAAP streetdance is still new, and we did not know how it will turnout. Through feedback, we can improve our routine, but I believe we still gave our all,” Gesmundo said.
Hosted by television personalities Iya Villania and Gab Valenciano, the UAAP Streetdance Competition was created to encourage people to watch the closing ceremonies of the biggest intercollegiate sports league event in the country. M. R. A. Barrios
