Following Chris Cantonjos’ resignation as the Tiger Cubs head coach on Feb. 21, Growling Tigers head coach Aldin Ayo tapped his assistant Bonnie Garcia as the interim head coach of the juniors’ basketball team.
Ayo, who heads UST’s basketball operations both in high school and college, said he chose Garcia to keep his plan on applying a single training system from the juniors’ division to the seniors’.
“Our plan is to have the same system in high school and college, para pagpasok sa college, madali na. We want to compete sa high school level and prepare them pag-akyat sa college,” Ayo told the Varsitarian.
Garcia, who is the former head coach of the Lyceum of the Philippines University in the NCAA and Sta. Lucia Realtors in the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) in 2016, first met with the Tiger Cubs last April 2.
“Ang objective is dapat prepared sila pagpunta sa college. Bale, tinitignan muna namin sa juniors’ kung sinong dapat mag-stay,” Garcia told the Varsitarian. “[The juniors’ program] would be similar sa seniors’ kasi doon din naman papunta ang programa.”
