UST prof bags Nat’l Science and Technology Week award for shrimp research

Former Science dean named academician of Nat’l Academy of Science and Technology

July 8, 2015, 12:04 p.m. - UST'S top scientist has been elected to the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) as an "academician," one of the body's highest distinctions.

Prof. Fortunato Sevilla III is only the third Thomasian to be named as academician of the UP-dominated NAST, following Alfredo Santos (physical chemistry) in 1978 and Gregorio Zaide (history) in 1985.

2 UST scholars among top PH scientists

June 10, 2015, 3:14 p.m. - TWO THOMASIAN researchers were included in the Top 150 scientists in the Philippines based on their respective Google Scholar (GS) Citation Profiles.

John Donnie Ramos, dean of the UST College of Science, and Rey Donne Papa, of the Research Center for Natural and Applied Sciences (RCNAS), placed 59th and 120th, respectively in the country’s list of the most outstanding and renowned scientists from different universities and government agencies.

Pope’s encounter with youth in UST ‘not just for Thomasians’

Nov. 28, 2014, 9:52 a.m. - POPE Francis' meeting with the youth in Asia's oldest university on Jan. 18 will be open to all, not just Thomasians.

Bishop Leopoldo Jaucian, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines—Episcopal Commission on Youth (CBCP-ECY), said the gathering in the Pontifical University would be for the whole Church, especially Catholic youth.

“We are happy that UST accepted to be venue of this youth encounter. But this is not merely for Thomasians," he told the Varsitarian. "This is open for everyone, but with special prioritization for the youth.”

The UST parade ground will however be reserved for pre-selected participants from youth ministries of dioceses across the nation, which the ECY will determine.

UST improves in Chemistry boards

Oct. 10, 2014, 8:29 p.m. - THE UNIVERSITY improved its passing rate in the 2014 licensure examination for chemists, with two Thomasians entering the top 10.

UST posted a 78.26-percent passing rate, or 36 passers out of 46 examinees, which was higher than last year’s 63.83 percent or 30 passers out of 40 examinees, results from the Professional Regulation Commission showed.

Former Science dean gets festchrift, academic tribute

To honor his contributions in the field of chemistry, the UST Graduate School presented a festschrift to Fortunato Sevilla III last Feb. 26 at the Faculty of Civil Law Auditorium.

A festschrift is a volume of writings by various authors presented as a tribute to a scholar.

“[It] is for distinguished member of the faculty [whose] scholarly achievements are beyond question and his contributions to the field are monumental,” Graduate School (GS) Dean Marilu Madrunio said in her speech during the presentation of the festschrift. “It is the highest recognition given to a master mentor.”

Madrunio stressed that a festschrift could only be given to an academic with prodigious intellect and indelible legacy.
