MANILA Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle on Monday warned against idolatrous worship of money and power that blinds people from the truth, during the Mass for the rededication of the altar at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros.

“Tingnan mo ang inaalay sa diyos-diyosan ng kapangyarihan: [ang] katotohanan. Sinusunog ang katotohanan… [K]aya wag kang maghandog nang maghandog sa diyos-diyosan na pera. Hindi ka mahal niyan…[g]agawin kang corrupt ng pera,” he said.

He challenged the faithful to live up to their Christian identity by responding to the needs of others wholeheartedly and without reservation.

“Huwag nating sayangin ang ganda nitong katedral. Sana higit na maganda ang buhay na templo. Minahal tayo; magmahal [at] magmalasakit nang hindi napipilitan,” he said.

The rededication of the altar coincided with the 60th anniversary of the reconstruction and consecration of the Manila Cathedral, the eighth to be built on the site in Intramuros, Manila, in 1958.

The seventh cathedral was destroyed by World War 2 The Neo-Romanesque cathedral houses the See of Manila and is dedicated to the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, patroness of the Philippines.
