ARCHITECTURE Alumnus Angelo Mañosa highlighted the importance of the environment in advancement and innovation in Philippine architecture.

Mañosa tackled sustainable tropical architecture in “Icons MADE: the 2019 Art MADE Public,” the first of a series of traveling exhibits and lectures by Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE), held at the Podium in Mandaluyong last Jan. 24.

“[A]t the end of the day, you have to balance the needs of, basically, the environment, architecture and man… Environment first, then architecture, then man’s needs,” he said.

Mañosa, son of National Artist and UST alumnus Bobby Mañosa, and grand winner of the 2010 MADE Architecture Competition, shared the stage with fellow MADE Competition winners Alfredo Esquillo, Jr. and Emmanuel Garibay.

The exhibit featured works by previous MADE Competition winners, including Mañosa’s winning architectural designs.

“The Private Residence,” Mañosa’s design that won the MADE 2010 Grand Prize, was a collection of contemporary house designs intended to be eco-friendly by using natural lighting, solar panels and other alternative sources of energy.

A notable piece was the MADE 2007 Grand Winner “Attack of the Righteous,” an oil-on-canvas painting by Mark Garcia depicting the clash of good and evil through chaos, swords and crosses.

“Walang Panghahawakan ng Anuman sa Palad” by architect Jonathan Dangue is a large sculpture of an open hand made of bamboo toothpicks.

“Our goal is to garner an entrance this year, as well as to showcase our past winners… All our winners have now reached a certain point of success,” said Metrobank representative Nicole Dörig.

Other works featured in the exhibit were by artists Elmer Borlongan, Raffy Napay, Leeroy New, Mark Justiniani, Dr. Wilhelmina Garcia and architect Gerard Joson.

The Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) is an award-giving body formed by the Metrobank Foundation, Inc.

The traveling exhibit ran at the Podium until Jan. 31 and will move to its next location in Angono, Rizal on Feb. 28. J.A.C.Casucian
