NOW SHE understands
that the rolling
of the tides brings
both misery and optimism.
For when she saw them
take you away,
she sought,
without thinking,
to follow after.
And so she braced the tides—
struggled, straggled,
fought off each wave.
But they told her “No,
not you. Not yet,”
and returned her upon the shores.
And as the tides took you away,
she hoped
they would return you
just as they had returned her
or perhaps
they would take her to new shores
you would land upon.
