UST LITERATURE Department Chairman Joselito de los Reyes urged writers to pass on knowledge to their readers during a discussion on creative writing at the UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy building last Nov. 8.

“As a creative writer, [you] should make sure that readers learn something from [your] creations. [Readers] must feel that they are more intelligent after reading [your] works,” de los Reyes said.

De los Reyes stressed that creative writers must also be creative readers.

“Creativity depends on the knowledge of the craftsman, thus, creative writing relies on what the writer reads,” de los Reyes said.

De los Reyes, a two-time National Book Award recipient, was named Makata ng Taon by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino in 2013.

His latest book titled “Finding Teo,” published by the UST Publishing House, discusses the poetics and life of the Filipino poet Teo Antonio.

The event, organized by Accountancy Student Council, was part of Likha: Amvians Literary Arts Exposure that featured discussions on creative writing, painting, sketching, songwriting and spoken word poetry.
