Ateneo is the lone Philippine university in the categories of engineering and technology and natural sciences, placing 96th and 68th, respectively.
As of posting, UP’s rankings in all subjects are unavailable.
In the indicator rankings, UST is the top Philippine university in terms of citations per paper, placing fourth with a score of 99.6. UP ranked 136th, while Ateneo, La Salle, and Xavier University placed in the 201+ bracket.
No Philippine university entered the papers per faculty indicator, however.
In academic reputation, UST placed 124th, down from last year’s 95th. UP, Ateneo and La Salle stood at 34th, 52nd, and 79th, respectively. University of San Carlos (USC) and Polytechnic University of the Philippines landed on the 201+ bracket.

La Salle, Xavier, UP, and Adamson University was included in the 201st+ bracket.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology remains the top Asian university. Reden D. Madrid
I wish the whole UST community especially its administration will do something about this declining ranking of the university in this international survey. During my days at UST in the 80s I can remember how vigorously the administration would equip the Faculty of Engineering purchasing every so often laboratory apparatus and machines for this faculty. Nowadays however, I hardly hear any news both from the Varsitarian and the Academia about this college being improved or developed. Has the UST administration given up hope on its engineering college? Kudos however goes to the whole UST community for being able to somehow maintain its leadership in the following fields: architecture, music, pharmacy, medical technology, accountancy, law, medicine, nursing, nutrition and dietetics, rehabilitation science, and education. It is also good news that UST has finally offered the following new courses: Speech Pathology, Special Education, English Language Studies, and History. Many are wondering why there is no Computer Engineering yet at UST. Speaking of computers, there is almost no news at all emanating from UST about its IT Department which is a part of the Faculty of Engineering. I wonder how the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management is doing these days. This is where I came from during a time when it was still a part of the College of Education. More effort has to be invested on the part of the studentry and the administration and by the faculty as well if our ranking in this survey is to improve. The UST should not be complacent and just sit on its laurels from past achievements. One thing that I notice is that, in DOST scholarships for instance, UST’s courses such as IT, Computer Science, Applied Physics, and BSE Math and BSE Biology are not yet a part of DOST scholarhips. Why is this so? What needs to be done so that these courses of the university will be included in DOST’s scholarships for graduating high school students? UST colleges offering these courses must see to it that they make proper representations so that their courses would be recognized and start to attract good scholars from among DOST yearly batch of scholars. In this department, it seems that UST is weak. It is not as aggressive as the other schools when making representations with DOST. No wonder, just a few of science high school graduates end up studying in UST. Please continue to strengthen further the university’s competence while maintaining its steadfast principles of commitment and compassion. By doing so, UST’s graduates will become even more employable and more effective as nation-builders of our country today.
DEAR FELLOW THOMASIANS !
I read some comments in the Varsitarian regarding the performance of the UST Faculty of Engineering in various fields. We do constantly purchase new equipment for our students. But Varsitarian normally does not publish purchases made by UST for Engineering or other collleges but definitely, our various departments purchase modern equipment every year.
Many of our faculty members present papers in other countries. By the way, since November 1, 2009, the yearly tour of our graduating students was not limited anymore to Luzon. Our graduating students go to Palawan, Cebu, Bohol and Singapore (for ECE and IE). Last year and first time, graduating students of CS, IS and IT had their field trips and they went to the VISAYAS.
For the information of some members of the Thomasian Community, may I share the following. Definitely, there are so many many rooms for improvement:
1. We believe that UST is ONE of very few private schools in the country with at least TWO WORKING Universal Testing Machines. We purchased the second one the other year. Our civil engineering laboratories are equipped with modern equipment for surveying, water laboratory, soil, structural testing, etc. Our Civil Engineering dept. consistently produced the past 30 years high passing rate in the board exams and yearly many board topnotchers. It is also a top performing school in the country. PRC SHOULD PUBLISH THE PASSING RATES of SChOOLS EVERY YEAR OR THE PAST FIVE YEARS, TEN YEARS, ETC. for the guidance of the public. The roster of our faculty is never below par. The civil department has the highest average number of degrees per faculty. The former dean of on metro manila university, who has two PHD Degrees, recently transferred to UST Engineering as a full time faculty Member. A Civil Engineering Faculty Member, an expert in Logistics (PhD from Tokyo University) and Vice President of a multi billion road project corporation in the country is also a with the civil engineering department. Our structural, construction and water engineers are consultants and at par with the best in the country.
The structural engineering firm of JOSE SY, my classmate, is the the number one in the country today.
2. The industrial engineering department has consistently produced at least five (5) topnochers in the Certfication Examination given by the Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers; our passing mark is very high FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. this certification exams, while not given by PRC, has the full support of the Professional Technological Council (umbrella group of all engineers in the country)
3. Our Electrical Engineering was the ONLY TOP PERFORMING SCHOOL for Electrical Engineering in the country last September 2011 with a Passing Rate of 90+% passing rate. The roster of our faculty includes Professional Electrical Engineers and one ASEAN Engineer. One of them, a lady electrical engineering, is a violin player
4. Our Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Department, Chemical too have very good performance in their respective fields.
5. Chemical Engineering Teams for the past two years were champions in the National Research Competition a. no. 1 and 2 last 2011 and b. No. 1, No. no. 2 and No. 4 held in Surigao. Representatives of DOST were here in UST last March 2012 and were impressed by the Research Competition sponsored by our Chemical Engineering Department. This research competition, held for the past four years, was participated in by other colleges such the college of science and the food department of the college of education.
Incidentally, Chemical Engineering was the sponsor of the Women’s day last March, and it was the only one of its kind in the university.
The roster of faculty members for UST Chemical Engineering is one of the strongest in the country and the department is geared towards research.
6. Re Computer Science, IT and IS: Our students last year have this passing rate in the DB2 exams given by IBM: 54 out of 55 or 98 percent. Various government agencies are consulting our Faculty members on their projects.
The Student President of the Entire National Computer Society (national student chapter ) is a student from UST Engineering.
7. UST Electronics Engineering is part of the CISCO Networking Academy and for so many years national leaders in this field come from UST: Engr. Lot Baldelomar and Engr. Amante Garcia
UST Engineering trains even local employees of UST for free.
The faculty of Engineering also trains janitors, security guards for free.Comparatively and nationwide, UST Electronics engineering has a very high passing percent in the board exams
8. UST Mechanical Engineering has been designing and competing in the Shell Echo Marathon in Malaysia for the past two years 2010, 2011 (where only a few schools in the country were participants). We are sending three observers to Malaysia this July or August for the Echo Marathon and next year our Team (consisting of Mechanical and Electronics students) will again compete in Malaysia.
9. UST Mechanical Engineering also designed the Electrically Operated Ambulance and which became operational January of last yea. It is still being used by the UST Health Center.
UST Mechanical Engineering ASHRAE was part of the Philippine group that won first place in HONG KONG Regional Competition last year.
10. The efficient computerization of records of the health center and other units of the university is with the help of the ICS Student Researchers of the ICS Department of the Faculty of Engineering.
11. I wish to inform everyone that UST Faculty of Engineering is also the
a. Current back to back UST Champion for PAUTAKAN
