June 3, 2012, 9:13 p.m.: THE UST Lady Spikers are a win away from clinching their seventh Shakey’s V-League title after defeating Ateneo de Manila University, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23, in Game 1 of the Finals at the Arena in San Juan Sunday evening.
Down by two in the final frame, 20-22, UST rode on Maruja Banaticla’s crosscourt attack to draw first blood in the best-of-three championship series.
“We just need to step up on our blocking again because we already have our offense figured out,” coach Odjie Mamon said.
Lady Spikers Judy Caballejo and Maru Banaticla led the team with 15 and 14 points, respectively, while former UST High School standout Alyssa Valdez starred for Ateneo with 20 markers.
