PRESIDENT Aquino has appointed a Thomasian as the Philippine ambassador to China amid a territorial dispute between the two countries.

Veteran diplomat Sonia Brady, a graduate of the old Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, is returning to her old post. Brady had been the country’s ambassador to China from April 2006 to January 2010.

She also served as the country’s envoy to Thailand from 2002 to 2003 and Myanmar from 1995 to 1999, and was the deputy chief of mission to Indonesia and Thailand from 1994 to 1995 and 1992 to 1994, respectively.

Brady served as undersecretary for policy of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) from July 2003 to 2006 and assistant secretary to the Office of the Secretary for Policy and Coordination from 1999 to 2002.

From 1988 to 1992, she was the director of the DFA’s Office of Asia and the Pacific. From 1968 to 1976, she was assistant at the Office of Political Affairs.

Brady, who was named to the post last May 27, breezed through the Commission on Appointments last May 30.

The diplomat will also have concurrent jurisdiction over North Korea and Mongolia.
