Oct. 30 2016, 6:58 p.m. – THE OFFICIAL Twitter account of the UST Central Student Council (CSC) was hacked last Oct. 28, losing half a million followers and some 6,700 tweets.

In a statement on its Facebook page last Oct. 30, the CSC said it was “unbeknownst to the whole team, [which] is in charge of the Council’s public relations, as to how the account was accessed by someone other than those who have been authorized.”

The hacking occurred between 8:00 to 8:30 in the evening of Oct. 28, it said. The alleged hacker, who had the username “Rereklamlar,” tweeted messages promoting a product and software, and changed the CSC’s recovery e-mail address.

The council vowed to “work relentlessly” in resolving the issue and ensuring the security of its accounts.

The CSC has sought help from the Twitter support service, but no response has been received so far, the statement said.

“The team is persistent in asking for support service from Twitter administrators and is in constant check for further notice, but so far, no response has yet been received. Such response may possibly take days. At the moment, the only problem left is the loss of account data,” the statement read.

Public Relations Officer Jherome Ramos said the Council would consult the University’s Social Media Bureau on ways to safeguard its social media accounts.
