THE UST Golden Shuttlers suffered a 5-0 setback against the De La Salle University Green Archers in the UAAP season 82 men’s badminton tournament at the Centro Atletico Badminton Center in Cubao, Quezon City Tuesday.
Green Archer Emilio Mangubat Jr. used a 6-0 rally to fend off UST’s Jerone Belong, 21-11, 21-14, while Neil Andrew Pineda had to break a deuce for a win against Shuttler Sean Dela Cruz, 21-19, 23-21.
UST duo Josh Defensor and Russell Enriquez brought the fight to Bless Linaban and John Gavile but fell short in three sets, 17-21, 21-18, 21-19.
Brothers Henry and Henric Peralta lost to La Salle’s Christian Bernardo and Emilio Mangubat Jr., 21-12, 21-18.
UST’s Lanz Adrian Ramirez was plagued by errors, crumbling versus Christian Bernardo, 21-15, 21-17.
Golden Shuttler head coach RJ Ormilla remains optimistic despite the devastating loss.
“Ang kagandahan [sa team] although our team consists of rookies, talagang makikita mong di kami basta dinadaanan lang,” Ormilla told the Varsitarian.
The UST Golden Shuttlers will face the defending champions National University Bulldogs on Sept. 29, Sunday, 8 a.m. at the Camp Crame Badminton Court in Quezon City.
