The UST Golden Shuttlers grabbed their first win after sweeping the De La Salle University Green Shuttlers, 5-0, in the UAAP Season 85 men’s badminton tournament at the Centro Atletico Badminton Center in Cubao on Saturday.

UST team captain Lanz Ramirez and Francis Sarmiento overpowered DLSU’s Eljee Gavile and Yuan Tan, 21-14, 21-15, in the doubles division.

UST’s duo of Janzen Panisales and Ron Galve dominated DLSU’s Joshua Morada and Pete Abellana, 21-13, 21-17.

Lennox Cuilao trounced Joshua Morada, 21-11, 21-11, in singles match, while Kyle Basilio also drubbed DLSU’s Clark Golez, 21-9, 21-17.

Sean Dela Cruz used a 9-1 second-set rally against DLSU’s Bless Nilaban for a sweep, 21-9, 21-15.

The UST Male Golden Shuttlers improved to a 1-2 standing, protecting their Final Four bid.

UST head coach Charlie Medina said the team would have to sustain a “winning mentality” to make it to the UAAP podium.

“Ngayon, nag-adjust kami sa training and ‘yong push talaga. Push nila ‘yong limits hanggang dulo para sa UST,” she told the Varsitarian.
