February 14, 2016, 2:09p.m. – THE UST Golden Sox absorbed a 9-14 loss against the De La Salle University Green Batters in the UAAP Season 78 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Sunday.
UST cut its five-point deficit to two at the top of the seventh inning after Max Andrew Mercado, Don Jamil Santiago and Noriel Valencia completed all bases, 9-11. But the Green Batters scored three quick points in the same inning to protect their lead.
“Bumigay mga pitchers natin. Actually, ‘di na pitcher ‘yung pinang-closer ko. Walang mga puso. Lalong bumaba ‘yung mental toughness nila,” head coach Jeffrey Santiago told the Varsitarian.
Down by five points, the Golden Sox unleashed five conversions from Valencia, Christian Mercado, Ron Christian Dela Cruz and Marlon Gonzales to tie the match, 6-all.
The Green Batters scored another five runs at the bottom of the sixth inning courtesy of a back-to-back run-batted-in (RBI) double from Jonathan Park and Josh Salinas and an RBI single from Pocholo Dominguez.
The Golden Sox, which hold a 1-3 win-loss card, will try to end the first round with a win against National University on February 18, Thursday, at the same venue. C. A. Casingcasing
