THE UST Golden Sox fell short against the Thunderz All-Stars, 6-7, in the Philippine Baseball League Open Conference at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Saturday.

Trailing 5-7 at the bottom of the seventh inning, Raymond Vargas scored after an error from the Thunderz, but All-Stars pitcher Aids Bernardo struck out the last two batters to seal the win.

“Maganda ang team ngayon, lumalaban, ang problema lang ay mga errors at mga walk pero magagawan ng paraan. Kapag naiwasan ang mga yon, malakas ang team,” Golden Sox head coach Jeffrey Santiagi told the Varsitarian.

With UST leading 5-4 at the top of the sixth inning and with the bases loaded, Thunderz’s Justin Zialcita launched a three runs-batted-in left field fly double that sent Jerome Yenson, Paulo Macasaet and Bernardo home to take the lead, 7-5.

Tied at 1 at the bottom of the third inning, Golden Sox Vargas hammered a two RBI two-bagger that allowed Israel Antonio and JM Barsales to score, 3-1.

The All-Stars, however, converted three runs at the top of the fifth inning via Jonash Ponce, Yenson and Zialcita, 4-3.

Despite the win, Thunderz only had five hits while UST tallied seven.

The Golden Sox slid to a 0-2 win-loss card, while Thunderz remained unbeaten in two games.

UST will next face the De La Salle University Green Batters on June 1, Saturday, 8 a.m., at the same venue.
