THE UST Golden Sox fended off the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 10-6, in the Philippine Baseball League Open Conference at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Saturday.
With UST leading 8-6 in the seventh inning, Golden Sox Jayvee Selda hit a run-batted-in that sent Ivan Llave to home plate.
Gio Martinez’s right field fly ball propelled Selda to seal the deal for UST, 10-6.
“Buong team nag-contribute pati ‘yong pitching ay gumaganda and nag-iimprove na paunti-unti,” Golden Sox head coach Jeffrey Santiago told the Varsitarian.
Arson Lipalam’s center fly ball pushed Selda back home for an 8-6 UST lead in the fifth inning.
With all the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Golden Sox Jan Santiago punched a two RBI grounder that sent Selda and Lipalam to home base and tie the game at 6-all, before Lipalam went for another grounder and allowed Mhigeil Cerda to take the lead for UST, 7-6.
With the game tied at 2-all in the second inning, Fighting Maroon James Macalma scored a run, before UP’s Gabriel Yang blasted a three RBI left field flyer that sent Karl and Mark Liwanagan and Fritz Natanauan back to home base for a commanding 6-2 advantage.
The Golden Sox will next face the Rizal Technological University Alumni on June 15, Saturday, 8 a.m., at the same venue.
