THE UST Golden Sox suffered their first loss after falling short against Adamson University, 14-8, in the UAAP Season 86 baseball tournament at the UP Diliman Baseball Field on Sunday, March 3.

A run by Harry Geronimo off Jaywill Badrina’s run-batted-in single gave the Golden Sox a 5-3 lead, before two hits by John Vargas in the bottom fourth and sixth scored Mark Trillana and Migheil Cerda, 7-4.

Adamson tied the game at 7-all courtesy of Mark Montoya, John Tupig and John Matanguihan in the top of the seventh inning.

The Soaring Falcons pounded the Golden Sox in the bottom eighth with four more runs by Montoya, John Matanguihan, Tupig and Arjay Bautista, 11-7.

Geronimo, who mainly played as a shortstop in the game until the ninth, relieved Steven Dominguez on the mound but could not hold off the surging Adamson as Montoya, Jayr Mangilit and Tupig scored three more for the Soaring Falcons to notch their first win and hand UST its first loss, 14-8.

“Maganda ang palo nila. Tayo kaunti lang hit natin at marami pang error,” UST head coach Jeffrey Santiago told the Varsitarian. “Wala tayong magagawa. Na-control ng pitching ng Adamson ang ating opensa.”

Adamson capitalized on three consecutive errors by UST on the first base, putting the Golden Sox to a 3-0 hole.

UST had nine hits and five errors against Adamson’s 14 and two, respectively.

UST slid down to a 2-1 win-loss slate to enter a three-way tie with DLSU and Ateneo to represent the top teams, while Adamson also figured in a three-way tie with NU and UP, representing the bottom three with similar 1-2 records.

The Golden Sox will next face the Ateneo Blue Eagles at the same venue on Thursday, March 7, at 6 p.m.
