A DOMINANT UAAP bigman in the 90s will now call the shots for a struggling UST high school basketball team, which has missed the finals in the last five seasons.

Chris Cantonjos, a former league MVP, steered the Growling Tigresses to four Final Four appearances in seven years. But the Tiger Cubs present a different challenge.

Cantonjos will inherit a team that will lose six players due to the adjusted UAAP rule, which now bars players born before June 30, 1998 from joining a school’s roster.

Cantonjos, who was an assistant coach in the Tiger Cubs’ last finals appearance in 2010, presided over a tryout of at least 130 aspirants at the UST Practice Gym last Friday.

“Masaya ako. Mas forte ko ‘yung para sa mga bata at guys, kasi pagdating sa women’s [basketball] madami akong hindi maituro kasi ang daming bawal,” he told the Varsitarian.
