THE UST Growling Tigers ignited a huge fourth quarter surge to roll past the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 79-57, at the University College Basketball League summer tournament at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy Sunday.

Trailing 57-53, the Tigers scored 12 unanswered points in the payoff period to claim their second-straight win.

“JRU is a very physical team. The players have their poise at alam nilang mapipisikal sila, so we maximized the penalties,” UST assistant coach Bonnie Garcia said.

JRU committed 15 of its 23 fouls in the first half and reached penalty midway in the second and fourth quarters.

UST’s newly-acquired players delivered as Renze Abando led UST with 17 points while import Soulemane Chabi Yo chipped in 16 markers and six boards.

Bomber Jed Mendoza led all scorers with 20 points.

The Tigers will seek their third-straight win against the Centro Escolar University Scorpions on Wednesday, 9:45 a.m., at the same venue.
