Former UST head coach Pido Jarencio is back to call the shots for UST on a three-year deal, an official told the Varsitarian on Friday.

The length of Jarencio’s contract was revealed to the Varsitarian by UST athletics director Fr. Rodel Cansancio, O.P.

“Itong new coaching staff, hopefully ito na yung pang-long term na maa-achieve natin yung sinasabi natin na rebuilding,” Cansancio said.

Jarencio coached the Tigers for eight seasons (2006-2013) and has one championship, three finals appearances, and six Final Four berths under his belt.

UST’s reunion with Jarencio was made possible following the resignation of Bal David, who led the Tigers to a 1-13 record in Season 85, on Jan. 26.

“Sobrang masaya, and nagpapasalaamat ako sa UST para sa trust and confidence nila sa pagbabalik ko dito,” the returning UST head coach told the Varsitarian.

“Ako naman, talagang I’ll do my best na mabalik ang glorya dito sa UST”

Joining Jarencio’s all-Thomasian coaching staff as assistants are former Tigers Japs Cuan and Jeric Fortuna, Juven Ledesma, and his son, Jaren.

Cansancio said Jarencio was the best person to instill a “winning culture” into the young Tigers squad.

“Coach Pido is the best person to instill the team’s culture. His mantra, ‘Puso, Pride Palaban,’ iyan ang magiging identity ng team. Now, it’s easy to say na we have our own identity, something that is really Thomasian,” the IPEA regent said.

Also new additions to the Tigers’ management are Waiyip Chong and Eric Ang as team managers and Northport Batang Pier head coach Bonnie Tan as team consultant.

Jarencio, who is Northport general manager, said his PBA duties would not be affected by his return to UST.
