THE UST Tiger Cubs came up clutch and became the first team to upend the Adamson Baby Falcons, 67-64, in the UAAP Season 86 boys’ basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Centre on Sunday, Jan. 7. 

Kurt Velasquez sank the game-sealing teardrop that gave UST its biggest lead, 67-62, with 25.4 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. 

With UST down by 16 at the end of the first half, 47-31, the Tiger Cubs unloaded a 20-7 third-quarter run to cut the deficit to three before heading into the payoff period. 

UST was outscored by Adamson in fast break points, 13-1. 

However, the Tiger Cubs capitalized on second-chance points, scoring 13 markers off 14 offensive rebounds. UST’s first unit also outscored Adamson’s starters, 44-37.

UST improved to a 5-3 win-loss tally, while Adamson remained atop the standings with a 7-1 record.

Andrei Dungo paced the Tiger Cubs with 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals, while JB Lim contributed 10 markers and five boards.

Vincent Reyes led the Baby Falcons with a double-double performance of 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Justine Garcia added 13 markers.

The UST Tiger Cubs will next face the De La Salle Junior Archers at the same venue on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m.
