THE UST Junior Male Woodpushers finished with a silver medal, while their girls’ counterparts bagged bronze in the UAAP Season 86 juniors’ chess tournaments that ended at the FEU Tech Gym on Sunday, Nov. 19.

The Junior Male Woodpushers settled for second place after faltering against Far Eastern University Diliman, 3.5-0.5, in the UAAP boys’ chess tournament championship decider.

They finished as runners-up with 13 match points and 22 game points, consisting of six wins and one draw. FEU won the championship after recording 15 match points and 28.5 game points.

Al-Basher Buto forced a draw with Lemuel Adena in 71 moves.

However, Karlycris Clarito, Oshrie Reyes and Jian Rivera succumbed to Baby Tamaraws Franklin Andes, Jerish Velarde and Oscar Cantela in Boards 1, 2 and 4, respectively.

Buto received the Rookie of the Year award and bagged the silver medal in Board 3 with six wins in eight games.

Ronald Dableo II won gold in Board 6, while Karlycris Clarito snagged bronze in Board 1.

Oshrie Reyes and Jian Rivera both claimed silver medals in Boards 2 and 5, respectively.

In the girls’ division, the Junior Lady Woodpushers snagged bronze after accumulating nine match points built on four wins and a draw.

Nathalie Liscano captured the gold medal in Board 3, while Fritz Baybayan notched silver in Board 6.

Precious Yecla, Marjeri Janapin, and Faith Tabungar also took home the bronze medals in Boards 1, 2 and 5, respectively.
