THE UST Yellow Jackets Drumline and the NU Percussion Department were hailed as co-champions in the co-ed drumline category of the 2018 National Drumline Championships at the Mall of Asia Arena last Feb. 27.

The YJ Drumline’s clown-themed performance tied NU’s explorer-themed routine with 289 points apiece.

UST Drummers Gabriel Zagala and Nicollete Zamora copped gold and silver, respectively in the solo drumline snare category before winning the open pairs category.

“I believe that we needed to show the difference of technique and skill individually before performing a full-band routine which showcases the ensemble,” YJ Drumline head coach Isaac de Alva told the Varsitarian in a text message.

UST Prime failed to defend its crown and dropped to third place in the college co-ed hip-hop category.

Prime’s zumba-inspired routine was not enough for back-to-back titles as NU-Underdawgz won gold while the University of Asia and Pacific Squadra Dance Varsity nabbed silver.

“It was a good run. For me, siguro mas tight na execution [ang kulang]. ‘Yung tipong undeniably excellent siya tignan in any angle,” Prime assistant coach Meeko Evangelista said.
