THE UST Golden Booters’ own goal in the final 10 minutes allowed the Ateneo de Manila University to walk away wirh 1-0 win in the UAAP Season 79 men’s football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Saturday (March 25).
Following a scoreless draw in the 82nd minute, UST’s Marvin Bricenio tried to deflect Javier Gayoso’s cross but the ball bounced back into the goal to give Ateneo its eighth win of the season.
UST could have forced a draw in the second minute of extra time but Darryl Regala’s free kick was blocked by the Ateneo wall.
“Last 10 minutes of concentration nawala sa amin,” UST head coach Marjo Allado said in an interview.
UST is still at fourth place behind a 4-4-1 record win-loss-draw record while the Ateneo kept its hold of the top spot with an 8-0-2 card.
The Booters will face the University of the Philippines on March 30, Thursday, at the Moro Lorenzo football pitch in Katipunan.
UST will try to capitalize on the absence of reigning MVP Daniel Gadia, Ace Villanueva and Marco Casambre of UP. They’re all playing for the Under-22 national football team.
