The UST-Philippine Korfball team narrowly defeated China, 10-9, to take the bronze in the Under-19 International Korfball Federation Asia-Pacific Tournament at Kowloon in Hong Kong Sunday.

Chinese Taipei captured the gold medal while host team Hong Kong settled for silver in the six-team event.

“The award we got was worth every sacrifice we made to be where we are,” PH team captain Bridgette Soriano told the Varsitarian in an online interview.

Soriano said being in an all-Thomasian team helped a lot in their chemistry during the four-day event.

Soriano and Kent Bagnol bagged the female best rebounder and male best scorer, respectively.

The Philippines lost to Hong Kong, 9-11, in the semifinals.

Members of the national korfball team who competed in the tourney include: Soriano, Bagnol, Chelsea Ajose, Ivy Rebusquillo, Madel Banebane, Vince Cubar, and Alyanna Sebastian.

The national korfball team was assembled in 2007 by the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics after attending a korfball seminar in Hong Kong.
