FORMER Glowing Goldies ace slotman Ed Cordero has been named the new commissioner of the UAAP basketball tournament for Season 70.

The 47-year-old Cordero was unanimously chosen over fellow Glowing Goldie and former Growling Tigers coach Aric del Rosario, to head the league’s basketball operations in a UAAP board meeting last June 15.

“Cordero is very qualified to man this position. He has first-hand experience with the ins and outs of local basketball, be it in the collegiate ranks or the professional level,” Felicitas Francisco, UST Physical Education Directress told the Varsitarian.

The 6’5” Corder played alongside Goldies legends Danny Florencio and William “Bogs” Adornado during his UAAP heydays in the early 70’s. Cordero, who finished a Masters Degree in Business Administration at UST, suited up for Alaska, Shell, Tanduay, Manila Beer, Beer Hausen and Toyota during his decade-long career in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

After folding his jersey, Cordero later threw his hat on the coaching arena, serving as assistant coach to several teams in the PBA such as San Miguel Beer, which held the most PBA titles at 17. He also became basketball team manager for Purefoods.

Cordera had served as Deputy Commissioner of the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association.
