THE UST Tigresses split their first two assignments in the Metro Ball Second Conference after notching a 55-39 victory against De La Salle University last May 14 at the Metro Gym in Mandaluyong.

Banking on the heroics of forward Remya Buenacosa, who scored 17 points, UST was in the driver’s seat throughout the match, seizing control of the game at the end of the third quarter, 38-31.

The hapless Taft-based cagebelles plummeted into a pit of errors in the final canto, allowing UST to surge ahead with ease. A block and a two-point jumper by diminutive point guard Kath Buyco with 10 seconds left in the game pounded the final nail on La Salle’s coffin.

Earlier, Tigress Marichu Bacaro registered a game-high 21 points in a futile bid to lift UST past Adamson University, 54-55, last May 7 at the Metro Gym.

Getting minimal contribution from her teammates, Bacaro racked up 18 crucial points in the second half, while Buenacosa added 10 markers in UST’s debut loss in the fledging league.

“They were already exhausted during the fourth quarter,” head coach Peque Tan said. “But they also lacked coordination and teamwork.”

Regardless, Tan is pleased that UST, which has been hogging the UAAP cellar in recent years, gave the San Marcelino-based squad a run for their money.

“It was a close fight considering Adamson is a strong contender,” Tan said. M.J. dG. Palarca
