FEMALE Woodpusher Carina Lumacad reigned in the Third Makati Councilor Virgilio Hilario Rapid Chess Festival en route to her second tournament title during competitions held at the Alphaland Southgate Mall last October 2.

Lumacad, the UAAP Season 72 MVP and UST team captain, topped the women’s division with five wins, a draw, and a loss, for a total of 5.5 points.

She outsmarted fellow UST Woodpusher Irene Samonte, Giane Perez of Adamson University, Jenwin Alconcher of University of Perpetual-Dalta, Arvie Lozano of Rizal Technological University, and Gladys Romero of Far Eastern University.

Her lone defeat came at the hands of University of the Philippines’ Krissa Lyn Abasolo in the first round. She settled for a draw in the final round against Judith Pineda of De La Salle University.

“Although I lost my first game against Abasolo, I didn’t lose my morale,” said Lumacad, who is on her final year with UST  this season. “These kinds of tournaments really practiced our reflexes and moves in preparation for UAAP.”

UST sophomore Christine Joyce Laz landed on 12th spot with 3.5 points. She bested Cary Labarda (Adamson), Joribene Bonifacio (National University), and Angeli Bayona (La Salle). But she surrendered to Lozano, Susan Neri (La Salle) and Michelle Yaon (St. Simon Montessori Laguna), and a drew with Akiko Suede (La Salle) in the fourth round.

Samonte finished at 16th place with three points. She won against Suede and Joy Fernandez (Ilocos Sur).
