The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe (SDT) settled for a miserable seventh-place finish in the second UAAP Streetdance Competition held at the Philippine International Convention Center Forum last March 10.

The group was good only for an overall score of 71.5 percent—only 0.5 points higher than cellar-dweller University of the East Street Warriors.

“We lacked preparation in our routine. We had a lot of activities inside and outside the University so we only had two weeks to prepare,” Salinggawi president Adams Bernabe said.

De La Salle University successfully defended its crown with a “street dance evolution” routine that got a score of 88.98 percent. The University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University finished second (86.40) and third (84.64), respectively.

Clad in a black-and-gold military-inspired costume, the SDT jived to the beat of electronica music and progressive techno, while performing succession floor dancing, tumblings, liftings and head stands.

“Despite losing, I’m still satisfied with our routine. I don’t know how the judges scored the routine. But I’m definitely contented with our dance,” Bernabe said. “We really want this kind of routine, which was inspired by God himself. Kaya ganun ‘yung costume and routine namin kasi we are dedicating our dance to God.”

The Salinggawi dancers, who placed fifth last year, punctuated their routine with a two-layered lift, “krumping,” and two-man basket tosses.

The Far Eastern University place fourth with 82.42 percent, while Adamson University, National University finished fifth (75. 88 percent) and sixth (72.16 percent), respectively.
