Key Tigresses fortify national team

TWO TIGRESSES were tapped to join the national team, but coach Chris Cantonjos isn’t exactly happy about it.

Judy Andaya, a 5-foot-2 guard, and forward Mary Joy Galicia, who both graduated last March, will likely miss the next UAAP season where they are still eligible to play.

RP team head coach Haydee Ong acknowledged that the national pool’s tough training schedule might keep the two Tigresses from practicing with UST.

“You can see their desire to play for the national team,” she said.

Said the 5-foot-8 Galicia: “If we don’t accept it now, we might lose the slot. We really want to continue playing for UST, but we also don’t want to miss the chance.”

Cantonjos said he did not like the way the national team got his wards.

“Masama ang loob natin sa RP team kasi ‘di tayo sinabihan kung ano talaga ang plano nila sa dalawa.” Cantonjos said.

“I seems that we’re the ones borrowing the players from them when the two came from us. They should have given the two a chance to play for UST, where they came from,” he added.

Galicia said she and Andaya would eventually make the final decision, but would not let UST be “bypassed.”

The two were initially invited last December to team up with an all-star collegiate squad to compete with the national team in a tune-up match. Andaya and Galicia are set to train with the RP team in China.
