TOP UST Tennister Macy Gonzales bowed down to Arellano University’s Marian Capadocia, 2-6, 0-6, in their championship match-up in the 11th Toby’s Annual Summer Tennis Festival 2012 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center from May 14 to 20.
Capadocia easily pinned down UAAP Season 74 MVP Gonzales, who was impeded by unforced errors and feeble attacks. Gonzales said she could have done better if she were in proper playing condition.
In the semi-finals, Gonzales swept a hapless Jenny Dizon of Davao City, 6-0, 6-0, after surviving Rachelle De Guzman of the University of Perpetual Help-Biñan, 7-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Gonzales crushed teammate April Santos in the eliminations, 6-3, 6-1.
Gonzales and Santos teamed up in the women’s U-18 doubles but lost to sisters Jade Capadocia and Marian Capadocia, 1-4, 2-4, who relentlessly uncorked consecutive smashes and volley shots.
Dominating netter
In other tournaments, the duo of Gonzales and De Guzman emerged as U-18 women doubles champion in the 4th Henry Lee Memorial Age Group Tennis Championships at the Manila Polo Club in Makati City from April 23 to 29.
The Gonzales-De Guzman tandem outsmashed Davao del Norte’s Lenelyn Milo and Pasig City’s Nicole Eugenio, 4-1 and 4-0.
The duo also ruled the 13th Tru-Flex National Age Group 2012 at San Juanico Tennis Courts in Muntinlupa from March 6 to April 1. Alexis U. Cerado and Carla Patricia S. Perez
